Teniendo en cuenta que la farmacéutica Eli Lilly vende el vial de insulina a US$ 275, es comprensible que el anuncio realizado en Twitter el pasado viernes tuviera una gran repercusión en la red social y más allá de ella.

Solo había un problema: la cuenta desde la que se hizo el anuncio, que contaba con el “tick” azul que hasta ahora certificaba que la identidad de ese usuario había sido comprobada por Twitter, era falsa.

Alguien había creado la cuenta y, haciendo uso de las nuevas normas introducidas en Twitter por Elon Musk, pagó los US$ 7,99 que ahora cuesta esa verificación para hacerse pasar por la farmacéutica estadounidense.

El mensaje acumuló cerca de 11.000 “me gusta” antes de ser suspendida.

Eli Lilly, esta vez desde su cuenta real, tuvo que salir a desmentir la información, provocando una marea de críticas entre los usuarios y los comentaristas por el precio al que cobra una terapia vital para las personas diabéticas.

Cerca de 7 millones de personas padecen diabetes en EE.UU., el país con los precios más altos de el mundo para este medicamento , que puede costar unos US$ 1.000 mensuales a aquellos que no cuentan con un seguro privado.

“Pedimos disculpas a quienes recibieron un mensaje engañoso de una cuenta falsa de Lilly“, tuiteó la compañía, indicando cuál era la cuenta oficial.

Uno de los que reaccionaron a este mensaje fue el senador demócrata Bernie Sanders , defensor de una sanidad pública en EE.UU: “Seamos claros. Eli Lilly debería disculparse por aumentar el precio de la insulina en más del 1200% desde 1996 hasta los US$ 275, mientras que cuesta menos de US$ 10 producirla. Los inventores de la insulina vendieron sus patentes patentes en 1923 por US$ 1 para salvar vidas, no para hacer al CEO de Eli Lilly obscenamente rico”.

Otros casos Eli Lilly es solo una de las decenas de víctimas de cuentas falsas que han proliferado en Twitter desde que su nuevo dueño decidiera cambiar las reglas de la verificación, lo que ha provocado caos y confusión dentro de la red social.

Entre los afectados se encuentran empresas como Apple, Nintendo, BP o Chiquita, además de políticos, famosos y otras organizaciones.

Twitter suspendió muchas de ellas, pero los constantes cambios de la compañía para abordar el problema, aumentaron la confusión.

Elon Musk finalizó la compra de Twitter por US$ 44.000 millones el pasado mes de octubre después de meses de arduas negociaciones. El multimillonario alegó que la red social del pajarito azul contaba con muchos más “bots”, es decir, cuentas falsas automatizadas, de las que habían reconocido sus antiguos dueños. Uno de sus objetivos iba a ser, según él, acabar con estas cuentas falsas.

Sin embargo, desde que se ha hecho con el control de la compañía, no solo ha despedido a cerca de la mitad de la plantilla de Twitter, unos 7.500 empleados, sino que ha puesto en marcha un mecanismo para vender la herramienta de verificación con la que contaba la red.

Hasta ahora, quien quisiera hacerse con ese “tick” o palomita azul junto a su nombre, debía probar ante la compañía su identidad.

Sin embargo, con el lanzamiento de “Twitter Blue” , un nuevo servicio de suscripción premium que por el momento solo estaba disponible para dispositivos de Apple en EE.UU, Canadá, Australia, Nueva Zelanda y Reino Unido, los usuarios que quisieran podían pagar US$ 7,99 mensuales para recibir esta marca, además de otras funcionalidades extra.

Para ello solo tenían que aportar una identificación de Apple y un número de teléfono.

Numerosos expertos habían advertido de los peligros de que Twitter Blue acabara convirtiéndose en un refugio de timadores , algo que, al menos en sus primeros días, parece haberse hecho realidad.

El alcance del problema empezó a vislumbrarse el mismo miércoles, cuando se puso en marcha la herramienta.

Twitter tuvo que suspender decenas de cuentas falsas , entre ellas algunas que se hacían pasar por el CEO de Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, el presidente Joe Biden y su antecesor Donald Trump , o el exprimer ministro británico Tony Blair.

En un caso, una cuenta falsa en nombre de la candidata republicana por Arizona , Kari Lake, reconoció la victoria de su oponente demócrata, cuando en realidad el recuento, muy ajustado, aún no había finalizado. Twitter tardó horas en retirar la cuenta.

Otra cuenta falsa de Tesla, que también es propiedad del dueño de Twitter, se hizo pasar por el propio Elon Musk para bromear sobre los atentados del 11 de septiembre de 2001.

Refugio de conspiracionistas El sistema de “Twitter Blue” también está siendo explotado por teóricos de la conspiración y activistas de extrema derecha .
